Uncle Arlie’s Hat of Dreams Oh aged Uncle Arlie Sleeping in a field of barley Through the starry hours of night Near the shelter of a thicket On his nose, there was a cricket In his hat, a railway ticket His shoes fit him just right But of all the felt hats that Arlie ever felt None felt as good as that felt hat felt. And he’s dreaming of a maiden Dark as a raven Who took him in one night Saying ‘Come in from the cold, take off those sodden clothes But do keep on the hat, I like you lots in that…. And don’t take off your shoes, for the flooring here is crude There are splinters on the steps to my floating feather bed Where I’ll loosen off my dress and together we’ll caress We’ll hold each other tight through the long winters night’ He woke up with a start On a bench in a park In the grungy, grimy town Poor Uncle Arlie There is no field of barley He’s nowhere near a thicket He has no railway ticket No cricket on his nose And his shoes they hurt him so No dark maiden To satisfy his craving He must have dreamt all that He has no fine felt hat.

The Dead Tobacconist Standing on an abandoned airfield Swear I heard the ghosts of long gone aeroplanes All around, the chalky downs were glistening Glistened in the pouring rain Later on, I found a market town Into the tobacconists I strayed He was a sad eyed man, looked like he carried the can For every single grey English day I said ‘cheer up mate, this smoke is great You can sure stand tall and proud At the tobacconist’s convention I hear this year they’re holding it under a cloud’ Standing on a deserted railway station Waiting for a train that never came Nobody about to help me out No-one to whom I can complain Think I’ll go back to that tobacconist Maybe he will agree to explain He said “You haven’t got it yet have you? You see my friend, you and me we are deceased We only walk around in memories In the present, we don’t exist” Well that blew me away…what could I say? I just blew him a kiss

A Place I Want to Be Following the line of her infinite gaze, I could see she was miles away Offered her a penny for the thoughts in her head, she said ‘There is a place I want to be’ We could go and live by the sea, fresh air appeals to me She shook her head as to disagree and said ‘No, there is a place I want to be’ In a mossy forest would be good, you always loved the smell of rotting wood Nodded her head because she understood but said ‘No, that’s not what I was thinking’ ‘I want to be in your loving arms, you’re a charmer, I’ve been charmed I don’t care if we live in a barn, you are the place I want to be’

Big Balloon 06:49
Big Balloon They say it’s your birthday, a week on Friday How ‘bout a ride in a big balloon? Can you bring some bread, cheese and boiled eggs? The pilot is my mate, he’ll fly over your place I’ll bring the dope and a telescope Wake up, rise and shine, I said to this friend of mine Don’t worry, there is no need, forecast says ‘gentle breeze’ We’ll be flying above the trees What’s a matter with you, you’re all weak at the knees Just think, we’ll be high over the canopy Somethings wrong with you, you don’t seem very keen You say I should know, you get vertigo, so, no way you’ll go in a big balloon You don’t get any bolder, as you grow older, all too aware of the dangers out there We’ll take a rain check on the big balloon, just forget I said big balloon Don’t even think about big balloon, oh but now we’re all thinking about big balloon I’ll cancel it with my mate, anyway he’s a basket case Aint gonna go on no big balloon.

Guardian Angel Jacob lost his ladder When he was working on his porch He went searching low and low Getting distraught Then he came upon a pair of hover-boots That changed his view No matter he lost his ladder Now he’s got flying shoes (Here she comes, out of the blue) He has a guardian angel Like everyone on earth All that sky above our heads And yet we’re down here treading dirt She’ll uncoil the strings Attached to his kite Wrap him up in her wings And together they’ll take flight You may believe in destiny But you are no slave to fate She’s here to tell there is no hell There are no pearly gates Instinct will inform you Of the path that you must take Listen out for your beating heart And find a better way (Here she comes, out of the blue) You have a guardian angel You may not hear her speak But she’s there inside you Somewhere deep She’s more like a feeling Helping you to choose In the pit of your stomach In everything you do You may have a dream It might not come true Ideas, schemes and things You always wanted to do Try not to let that dream Obscure the view If you do this then you may miss Avenues new You have a guardian angel She’s your guiding light In your darkest hour On the blackest, moonless night She’ll wrap her wings around you Together you’ll take flight And from on high you’ll see the things That down here are out of sight
