2. Early to Bed
Early to bed, early to rise
Set my clock by luna tide
Dawn comes heavy with mist and dew
The weird sad cry of the curlew
On the slippery jetty I keep my feet
Peer through the mist at the creek beneath
It wasn’t like this last night in my dreams
When the sea was calm ‘neath the sun’s bright beams
As he drifts into sleep he begins to dream of how it will be.
The sun will be shinning and the sea calm.
He will merrily row across and there will be Gloria, waving and beaming her beautiful smile.
Oh, how thrilled she will be at his proposal!

Draining Away

4. Draining Away
Wet wing flapping like a morning flannel
Straining my eyes to see the narrow channel
I curse this mist like a hopeless child
I need the sun to burn a hole through the silver-grey clouds
Between the saltings and the reedy mounds
The tide has turned, I must not run aground
For over a mile I must row (over a mile)
If I am to see the one I love so
I hit the hard and drag up my boat
Draw myself out like a telescope
The moon is still high, the sky’s god denying
Tugged by the tide, the sea is draining away

5. Where Are You?
Where are you Gloria, where are you?
I’m feeling in my pocket for the ring
I’m feeling in my pocket for the ring … oh yeah … still there
Fighting the tide in this thick mist it made me late
I’m wondering, for how long did you wait … with knotted brow … where are you now?
I want to offer you a very happy life
I want to offer you a very happy life … be my love … be my wife
Where are you Gloria, where are you?

7. Along A Long Song (Sea Wall)
Five long miles along a long sea wall
When I leave this long sea wall
I’m going to climb the hill to the rickety town
Oh Glory don’t think that I’d let you down
Think me lost or think me drowned
I’m walking five long miles along a long sea wall
My shoulders ache, I’ve got a raw sore throat
From calling your name and rowing my boat
Out of the mist climbs the rickety town
Oh Glory never think that I’d let you down
I’m walking five long miles along a long sea wall

8. In the Rickety Town
Stickleback seamstress trundles by in her carriage
Through the streets that reek of boiled pig and cabbage
A couple of curs fight over a dirty bone
Here in the town that she calls home
He’s making his way to Gloria’s abode
He hopes and prays that she is home
Here she was born, here she was raised
Here’s where we met in younger days
She was always fiery and she remains untamed
Who would deny me the heat of her flame
He’s making his way to Gloria’s abode
He hopes and he prays that she is home
Nobody at home, not even her cat
Oh where did she go, oh where is she at?
My head’s in a rut, I need time to think
I need food in my gut, I want something to drink
So I turn around back to the top of the town
Then it’s three steps down into the Rose and Crown
Barman Ben he’s a friend of old, he says “Gloria was here, she left an hour ago”
“She arrived around noon and she downed a gin
Then she downed another and she started to sing
She was quite the picture in her crimson dress
But I could tell by her face she was really upset
When she left, she was weaving east
My guess is that she’s gone to the Inn on the quay
All the ships are in and she can drink for free
Yeah, the sailors pay for her company’

Merry Melee - The Ooze

10. Merry Malay / The Ooze
I was thinking of my friend Ben and I was dwelling on what he had said
Tormented by the visions now lodged in my head
The floppy haired sailor with his hands around her waist
She caresses his shoulder, he kisses her face
Some say it’s OK, it’s just her love of life
And it won’t be that way, when she is my wife
I hate to admit it, I know it’s true
When she is high, there is nothing I can do
Chased by his own brain, he lollops down to the quay
Catches up with his feet, ahead he sees
Billyboys* on the mud, waiting for the tide [note* Billyboys are sea going barges]
Outside the inn, sailors killing time
I hear accordions play, a Boaty scrapes a fiddle
It’s a merry malay, and there in the middle
I see a flash of red, that’s Gloria’s dress
Now I see her face, all glazed and dazed
Sailor boy down on one knee, see how she flirts
One hand on her hip, the other lifting her skirts
She blows kisses and spins around
The crowd parts and she dances down towards the boats and the quay’s edge
Kicks off her shoes by flicking her legs
I call her name
(Gloria)
(Between his ears he is) Full of fear
She swings around and trips over a rope, looses her feet and over she goes
It’s a long way down when the tide is out
The crowd gasp, then they gasp again, as she hits her head on an anchor chain
Now she’s lying on the mud as red as her dress, stained by her blood
Face down in the ooze

11. Epilogue
I’m feeling in my pocket for the ring
Take it out and throw in down
Into the mud
Mixed with her blood
It’s a long way home way home, long time alone
For me there ‘ll be no other girl to share my island world.
It’s a long way home way home, long time alone
